2006 I began writing T'china Lema'an Haifa in the Summer of 2006 while studying with Michel Merlet as part of the European-American-Musical-Alliance composition workshop in Paris, France. My inspiration for this piece stemmed from the hostile situation in Haifa, Israel. One of my closest friends, Marina Roznitovsky, is from Haifa and was staying there for the summer. Unable to communicate with Marina, my concerns for her safety were transferred into my music. Through extended techniques such as quarter-tones and multi-phonics, I tried to depict the tension that every human experiences during a time of great stress and fear. I imagine this piece beginning with one person's soft cry that slowly evolves into a stronger plea for help. Presented in an arch-form, the piece returns to one voice (represented in the alto) which slowly dies away. I am very thankful that Marina and her family were among the fortunate in the Haifa hostilities.
